Such difficult times have also brought unprecedented stress toward many social welfare programs due to the exponential surge in demand. One of these social welfare programs are food banks. Feeding America is a non-profit organization that helps provide food to people affected by many situations and have food banks across the U.S.
It’s almost that time of year again. The best players from the FGC (fighting game community) and FGC fans converge on Las Vegas for the biggest fighting game event in North America.
The event: Evolution, or more commonly known as EVO.
EVO is a giant today in the FGC today. With EVO 2019 taking place from August 2nd to 4th, fighting game fans already booked their travel plans to Las Vegas or plan to watch the event online on on Twitch. While EVO is a behemoth in video games today, its humble origins go back two decades.
EVO’s humble roots
Founded by Tom and Tony Cannon, Seth Killian, Joey “MrWizard” Cuellar, and a handful of others, these FGC enthusiasts dreamed back in the 90s of a major, grassroots fighting game tournament.
Their vision would be realized several years later. In 2002, the founders pooled $10,000 used that money to host the first Evolution event in a UCLA ballroom. Since then, the event that has exploded in growth in the next 17 years.
Today, the yearly-event is held in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, a venue that frequently hosts some of the biggest boxing matches and music concerts. EVO attracts thousands of people to the event, while tens of thousands more go as spectators and cheer on the competitors. What was once a mere $10,000 investment to get the event started back in 2002 now ranges in the millions to finance the event each year.
EVO’s independence and grassroots brand
EVO wasn’t always this big.
Unlike nearly all other major events, EVO doesn’t have a big-name publisher or taken a massive bank loan to fund the event. The event is community run and funded, a fry cry from other esports such as the Overwatch League and Riot Games’ League of Legends World Championships, where gaming conglomerates push tens of millions of dollars into those events yearly.
For the EVO organizers, their community focus gives them a lot of flexibility. Rather than look for the biggest companies that may not know anything about the FGC and esports, EVO can align themselves with brands that have similar goals. Sponsors such as Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, Red Bull, and Twitch have all hopped onboard EVO, as all of them support EVO’s goals and are great fits for the fighting tournament.
The many aspects that draw people to EVO
Competitors put their skills on the line in games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tekken 7, Street Fighter 5, Mortal Kombat 11, and Dragonball Fighter Z. For people not in the thrones of competing, spectators also bring their own consoles to play causally with others or to play lesser-known fighting games.
One of the big draws of the event is the social aspect. Whether or not players compete in one of the tournaments, countless friendships have been forged at EVO. Many players first meet each other online, Discord, or gaming forums like Shoryuken. When these players go to the annual EVO event, they meet their online adversaries face-to-face for the first time and become friends.
Another draw is how the scene is very color-blind and accepts gamers in general. The scene just doesn’t cater to fighting game enthusiasts, but other esport scenes as well. From the Starcraft: Brood War and Starcraft 2 scene – as yours truly comes from, to League of Legends and DoTA 2, the scene welcomes all.
EVO 2019 will host Smash Ultimate’s biggest live tournament up to now, with 3,492 people competing.
As one of the most well-known and respected FGC players, Alex Valle, comments in Polygon, "EVO's tournaments are designed for the masses to play, regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs, any of that stuff, because they’re designed to find who the best players are in the world.”
This extends to the tournaments themselves, where there’s no invite-only barriers and anyone can walk on and enter a tournament. Newcomers can face world champions in the very first round. These new EVO competitors can also make a name for themselves as well in a mere weekend, upsetting highly-ranked players and placing high in their given tournaments.
It’s the close-knit community and openness of the fighting scene that makes the FGC very appealing to many.
----
With EVO 2019 just around the corner, the esports spotlight will be on EVO and Las Vegas. If you’re a gamer and love fighting games, the only question is, “will you be going to Las Vegas or watching it online on Twitch?”
]]>Team Liquid’s CS:GO team looks to continue their winning ways at this weekend’s BLAST Pro Series. Known as the best Counter-Strike team for their dominance jaw-dropping plays, Team Liquid is undoubtedly the heavy favorites going into the tournament.
However, as great as Team Liquid’s cast is, upcoming tournaments are not decided by hype or past accolades, but by how each team performs on game day. Team Liquid knows they’ll have their work cut out for them if they want to stay on top.
Los Angeles will play host to the two-day BLAST Pro Series CS:GO event on July 13-14. Held at the Galen Center at the University of Southern California, the teams will be competing for prize pool of $250k USD.
The tournament will have six teams competing – Cloud9, FaZe Clan, MIBR, NRG, Renegades, and Team Liquid. What makes this event intense is the thrilling group stage BO1 matches, making each match even more important.
Here is a brief breakdown of each team:
Team Liquid (US): Let’s start with the heavy favorites. Known as the dominant super team in the Counter-Strike scene, they have met all the hype thrown at them. They are fresh off a huge victory at ESL One Cologne and the Intel Grand Slam. The US team is also regarded as the best team over Danish team, Astralis.
Many are saying if this team keeps dominating, the CS:GO scene may be entering the Team Liquid era. Only time will tell.
Cloud9 (US): Since winning the Boston Major last year, Cloud9 has been reshuffling their roster. They would lose Stewie2k to MIBR, then tarik later on. With only Autimatic being the sole holdover from the previous roster, Cloud9 had to rebuild from the bottom. With this complete overhaul of their roster, many don’t know what to expect, since it takes time to get to the same wavelength among teammates.
This total revamp could go one of two ways: the team unexpectedly does well with potential to grow even further. Or the team fails to mesh, morale is low, and another change is underway. Let’s hope it’s the former.
FaZe Clan (EU): Like Cloud9, FaZe Clan has also undergone some roster changes recently. Veteran player Filip “NEO” Fubski, the best-ranked player in the world back in 2011, will serve as In-Game Leader. Yet, with a slew of some of the most skilled players in the game, FaZe could be a big challenge to any team and perhaps, pull off an upset.
MIBR (Brazil): The long-storied franchise of MIBR has been tinkering with their lineup. The team has been mired in a huge slump and disappointing finishes on ECS and ESL Pro League Finals. Something had to change and that it did.
To mix things up, they relegated longtime starter felps to the bench. The team would bring in LUCAS1 from Luminosity to give them a boost. If things don’t improve, the team may be shaken up further, including hints of Coldzera possibly moving to FaZe Clan.
Renegades (Australia): For much of their time, the team has always been good, yet never truly hit their potential. For instance, the team has won the Asia Minor Championship, yet had some rough outings at cs_summit 4, DH Masters Dallas, and IEM XIV Sydney. They recently fell out of the top 10 rankings in May, but a strong finish at BLAST will surely get them pointed in the right direction. Speaking of BLAST, the LA tourney will be the team’s debut.
NRG (US): NRG has been a player in esports for some time, having major talent especially in the Rocket League scene. However, NRG also has some serious talent in Counter-Strike, as they placed very high in recent tournaments. The team is ranked in fifth place in the HLTV CS:GO world rankings and is expected to place second in the tournament.
Like Renegades, NRG will be making their BLAST debut in LA.
In addition to the six highly talented CS:GO teams, the broadcasting desk looks to be stacked as well.
One member of the talent crew is famed League of Legends (LoL) host Eefje “Sjokz” Depoorte, who will be the event’s deskhost.
If you’re looking to go to the event (or watch online on Twitch), the doors will open at 10:00 AM PST on Saturday, July 13th. The opening round will be five BO1 group stage rounds.
Sunday on July 14th will feature two BO3 semifinals, then the BLAST Stand-Off match and the Grand Final.
]]>There’s a real treat for all the CS:GO fans out there this weekend! Of course, we are talking about the debut of the highly anticipated, much loved, Blast Pro Series. The organization is hosting its first ever tournament in North America in the beautiful city of Miami. Six of the most legendary Counter-Strike teams will face each other over two days of intense competition, with no sign of mercy to be spared. The teams will be competing in a “No-Qualifier” style tournament for a grand prize pool of $250,000 as well as points to contribute to the team’s total points, for secure placement in the Blast Pro World Series Championship.
The teams competing in the upcoming April 12 - April 14 weekend comprise of the most familiar names and faces in the Counter-strike fan’s mind such as Team Liquid, FaZe Clan, Cloud 9 and Astralis. To say the teams are veterans in the competitive Counter-strike landscape would be an utter understatement, as each team has their own combination of talent with varying track records from battle-scars to trophies from 2018.
Can’t ever talk about a Counter-strike competition without FaZe Clan being part of the conversation. As one of the earliest, most competitive teams to date, FaZe Clan has found the formula to continued victories and ranked placements. With their diverse roster, FaZe Clan has become a Counter-Strike fan favorite. In 2018, they have won 1st in EPICENTER, ESL One, and IEM, with the lowest placement of 2nd place. With so much experience and history under their belt, fans are expecting a great show from FaZe Clan.
Team Liquid continues to attract attention from the viewers. They have been runner-ups in major tournaments in 2018, and face high expectation from the community due to the strong performance of their talented team. Their roster was ranked number two as the best team in the world and is regarded as one of the fastest growing teams to date. Their current iteration is certainly under speculation of winning profusely. Team Liquid will definitely not be an easy defeat.
The Danish team has garnered lots of popularity and attention in the last few years for their astounding performance in many major CS:GO tournaments. With team members such as Magisk who had won the MVP award at IEM Katowice in 2019 paired with strong synergies between team members such as Device, Xyp9x, Dupreeh, great cooperation has been the greatest offensive tool. They have placed 1st in many of the major tournaments and continues to be one of the most closely watched team by the community. With this kind of track record, it is hard not to tread lightly when facing the Astralis team.
With so many qualified teams contending to be the best, Vertagear is proud to be the official chair sponsor and being able to participate in such a well-regarded event.
This weekend will be truly an exciting one. Make sure to tune in to the live stream with the link below and let us know who you are rooting for this Blast Pro Series – Miami.

Starting Slow
The first step is to understand what you are really looking for in the chair. Begin by asking yourself a few basic questions.
Evaluating the Designs
We are very visually driven animals. The design of the product is often the first thing that crosses your mind when browsing chair selections. As you look through the designs, really pay attention to things like the build quality of the leather, the stitching, and coloring.
Remember to ask yourself: Does this colorway suit me, my PC setup, or my home in general? Who doesn't want a gorgeous gaming chair to complete their setup?
Evaluating Adjustment Capabilities
When it comes to functionality, begin by asking yourself who will be using the chair the most.
These sort of questions can really help hone in on selecting the chair most appropriate for your use. Many gaming chairs are built for different types of purpose, some are better at adjustability than others.
First, pay attention to the number of directional adjustments the chairs is capable of.
After the basic adjustments, look for other adjustments such as increasing the cushion height, armrest directional adjustments, and really make sure they suit all your needs.
Take the Vertagear Racing Series for an example. Both have great designs but differ in functionality. The SL series is extremely popular, but may not fit and support those who want more space. The PL series on the other hand, provides a wider back and cushion design and industrial grade metal to make sure it fits.
Evaluating the back support
For those who love to stay in their gaming chair for long periods of time, it’s extremely important to pick a chair that fits your habits ergonomically.
Start by checking and considering the upper and middle back support. Properly designed chairs will have a robust combination of back support and will leave your body in it’s the natural shape which can prevent strains, backaches, and even injuries.
Check if the chair has proper lumbar support, or has the ability to adjust to the level of support your back needs. Different people have different degrees of comfort, make sure that the chair is properly designed for your own health. It is also important that the backrest could be reclined. This can help relieve pressure on your spinal discs and back muscles to make sure you stay comfortable no matter how long you decide to spend on sitting.
Evaluating the Seat Cushion
Just like the back support, a proper gaming chair should have an appropriate size when it comes to seat cushions. Cushions that are too large or too small can cause problems to your long-term health. The chair should give you ample room to maneuver to stay comfortable but shouldn’t be too wide where it loses the ability to hug you and keep you in place. The cushion should have a comfortable 1-3 inches of room to let your knees hang over.
Evaluating Build Quality
One of the most important elements to a good gaming chair is in the build quality. An average, run-of-the-mill gaming chair can often time be great for the first couple of months, and then start having quality issues that will drive you crazy! Let’s take a look at what to be looking for to avoid it.
In leather
The leather should be the first thing that you evaluate since it'll have most amount of contact with your body during the lifespan of the chair. Poor materials will work for the short term but will begin peeling, ripping, or even dying colors to your skin in the warm climate. Alternatives such as PVC leather is great as a choice for the long term use due to the
In Internal Cushions
The cushions will be the second most obvious notice in quality in a gaming chair. The cushions makeup of the shape and dictates the way you are sitting in the chair itself, so it’s important to make sure the seat cushions are designed for long-term use.
We all have seen or owned the set of sofa that seemed great in the first few months, but begins to sag and lose structural integrity after long-term use. This same concept applies in the gaming chairs. In order to make sure your chair last, it’s important to pay attention to the construction of what makes the chair great.
Properly designed cushions will be able to withstand use for long periods of time and will be less prone to things like sagging or major changes in the shape itself.
In Hardware
Something that people seldom pay attention to is the hardware in which the chair uses. The hardware can range from the screws, the structural base, the wheels, and the skeleton of the chair itself.
The good gaming chairs will have a high quality build for every aspect down to the screws that it uses. The base frames and the chair stands should be engineered to fit your height and weight.
The poorly constructed chairs will cut corners on using proper hardware which can lead to a short lifespan of the chair and can even hurt you in the process (yikes!)
Make sure to always check the type of hardware the chair uses to see if it will truly last as long as the company claims. Don’t cheap out on this, or you’ll likely wind up buying a second chair soon after your first!
Finalizing your choices
In order to finalize your choices, make sure you check the reviews online and from the community regarding your needs. Check out how the complex the assembly process is and how complex it’ll be when you have to physically strangle it together.
Like all purchases, it’s important to check the return policies and the customer service because having that knowledge may come in handy in the future. If you have the opportunity, definitely try to sit on one and make sure it’s the right kind for you.
Lastly, make sure to have fun in the process! There are a ton of variety out there, and picking up the one that suits you and your needs are going to make you enjoy the gaming chair that much more!
Your body is a shrine, so treat it like one! Check out our gaming chairs here.

The long-awaited action-adventure game takes place in Bailu Village in Guilin, China as a continuation to Ryo, the main character’s pursuit of his father’s killer. Fans of the game will enjoy the numerous expansion of the missions and maps as a result of the successful campaign. The release of Shenmue 3 will likely not conclude the sequel as hinted by the team, but will definitely be one of the hot releases of the year.
The Outerworlds: Launch on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
The action-role-playing game takes the player through a glimpse of the world after large corporations have taken over. The first person RPG is amplified with the use of detailed graphics of intergalactic travel and the sci-fi-like world. We already know a fair bit about the game as well as other characters, combat, and skillset experiences, but have yet been given an accurate release date. Regardless, with the reputable pedigree of the development team, The Outer Worlds has not failed at attracting excitement of the release sometime in 2019.
Devil May Cry 5: Launch on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
After almost a decade of waiting, the fans of Devil May Cry may finally rest easy knowing the release of the sequel is coming up. Devil May Cry 5 takes place after the events of the fourth and second part of the series and is a familiar balance of story, style, and absolute kick-ass characters. The stylish gameplay and captivating graphics have made the series a fan favorite amongst technophiles. What a glorious return for an absolute banger!
Kingdom Hearts 3: Launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Another popular franchise has joined forces with an equally impressive partner (Disney) to form a new world and gameplay like no other. The action role-playing game combines the familiar characters such as Sora, Riku, Kairi with new Disney characters alongside as protagonists. The premise takes place after the Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and continues their search for the seven Guardians of Light. Players should expect engaging twists throughout the gameplay, incorporating various Disney and Pixar properties like Disney Park attractions and mini-games inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse cartoons.

]]>SEPTEMBER 8, 2017 - As a long supporter of collegiate esports and college gamers, we are proud to announce our further commitment to the community through our new partnership with Southwest Baptist University. Our Racing Series SL5000 chairs now decorate their gaming room to provide their aspiring young players with the ergonomic support and comfort necessary to grind out long practice sessions and matches.
Founded in 1878, SBU has demonstrated their prowess as a reputable institute of higher education in Missouri. Competing in 16 different traditional sports divisions, the university leapt into the esports foray one year ago and have shown dynamic growth ever since. The university now works with several sponsors to provide their young athletes with an environment and facilities comparable to the best. SBU believes that esports is an avenue like any other sport that can help cultivate a student's education and passions, and we are aligned in that thinking.
Having launched our Student Program recently, we recognize the need to help college students out as they journey through higher education. With our new partnership with SBU, we are one step closer to the ultimate goal of seeing every aspiring college esports athlete seated in a premium ergonomic gaming chair.
